Toledo, Ohio – Baseball split their doubleheader with Defiance dropping game one and bounced back with a big win in game two.
John Caliendo highlighted game two with three hits and six rbi's while
Jordan Eck and
Christian Burgess combined for 13 strikeouts. The Golden Eagles face UNOH to complete the series on Sunday, March 15th at 2 p.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 4 Defiance – 5
- After a scoreless first inning, Cornerstone took a 2-0 lead as Corbin Westerkamp singled, and a throwing error brought Andrew Eley into score followed by Thomas Rupp driving in John Caliendo.
- CU added another in the third as Chace Sorenson scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
- Defiance responded in the bottom half of the third to cut into the CU lead.
- The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the game as they hit a grand slam to make it 5-3.
- In the top of the fifth Broedy Dunham hit a leadoff single before Drew Goodman doubled to bring Dunham across to score making it a one-run game.
- Cornerstone got two on in the seventh but couldn't bring them into score dropping game one to the Yellow Jackets.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 13 Defiance – 4
- Cornerstone began game two with a five-run first inning as John Caliendo hit a double down the right field line to drive in three followed by a two-run blast off the bat of Andrew Meny.
- CU added two more runs in the second off two straight fielder's choice plays to make it 7-0 in favor the Golden Eagles.
- Christian Burgess kept DC scoreless through four racking up seven strikeouts.
- Defiance got on the board in the sixth to make it a 7-3 game.
- In the top of the eighth Michael Ruiz scored on a wild pitch to extend Cornerstone's lead.
- DC brought another run across in the bottom of the eighth off a throwing error by CU.
- The top of the ninth saw CU add five runs as Nate Jackson singled to drive in Bryce Smith followed by John Caliendo singling to drive in a pair. Andrew Meny hit a single of his own to cap off the inning and made it a 13-4 game.
- Jordan Eck set the Yellow Jackets down in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for CU.
