Baseball Sweeps Siena Heights in Home Opener

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Baseball sweeps Siena Heights in home opener for what could the two school's final matchup. Thomas Rupp blasted a three-run homer in game two while Steve Hoeksema and Christian Burgess had stellar outings combining for ten strikeouts. 12 different Golden Eagles recorded a hit with seven having multiple hits. The Golden Eagles face Rochester Christian to close out the opening weekend at home with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 7 Siena Heights – 3
  • After holding Siena scoreless in the top of the first, Cornerstone opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly off the bat of John Caliendo that brought Andrew Eley in to score.
  • The Saints answered in the top of the second with a two-run homer to take the lead.
  • CU brought four runs across in the bottom of the third off singles by Andrew Meny, Nate Jackson and Broedy Dunham to take a 5-2 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles added another in the fourth as Drew Goodman singled to drive in Thomas Rupp and extend the CU lead.
  • SHU had an answer in the top half of the fifth as double brought in a run to cut into Cornerstone's lead.
  • Andrew Meny drove in another run in the six with a sac fly which saw Andrew Eley touch home to make it a 7-3 game in favor of the Golden Eagles.
  • Noah Weaver came in to pitch the top of the seventh and shut the door to give Cornerstone a 7-3 win in game one over the Saints.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 25 Siena Heights – 1
  • Cornerstone kept their momentum going into the second game as they broke out for four runs in the first as Drew Goodman tripled to bring Andrew Eley across to score and an error and a ground out saw three more runs come across.
  • The Golden Eagles added another seven in the second with another triple by Drew Goodman, a single by Luke Griffith that drove in two and capped off by a three-run blast off the bat of Thomas Rupp to give CU an 11-0 lead.
  • CU added one in the bottom of the third as Chace Sorenson hit a sac fly that brought Andrew Eley in to score.
  • Christian Burgess continued to deal throwing four scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
  • An error and singles by Corbin Westerkamp and Andrew Eley put three more runs up on the board for Cornerstone as they extended their lead to 15-0.
  • Jaden Franceschina replaced Burgess on the mound and struck out the first two batters he faced to get CU out of a jam in the fifth.
  • Cornerstone continued to add on as a double off the bat of Michael Ruiz, a hit by pitch and a wild pitch brought six more runs across for the Golden Eagles to make it a 21-0 game.
  • CU grew their lead in the sixth as singles from Jayden Floyd and JT Ten Eyck brought three runs across followed by an error that scored Floyd.
  • SHU got one on the board in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles closed out the game to secure to series sweep over the Saints.

The Golden Eagles face Rochester Christian to close out the opening weekend at home with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
