Grand Rapids, Mich. – Baseball split the day against Rochester Christian University as they fell in game one 13-11. The Golden Eagles turned it around in game two with 16 total hits and 15 runs in the nine inning contest. The Golden Eagles move to 8-18 overall and 4-4 in WHAC play.
The Golden Eagles will host Lourdes University who are 9-11 overall and 3-3 in WHAC play. The first doubleheader of the weekend will take place on De Witt Field on Friday, March 27 beginning at 1 p.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 11 Rochester Christian – 13

The first two innings were quiet for both teams with just one hit for the Golden Eagles, a single by Broedy Dunham that was hit to center field.

Rochester Christian headed the top of the third inning strong, as an RBI single sent a Warrior home for the first run of the day. The inning would not see its end before Rochester Christian saw two more runs in thanks to a double for two RBIs before a pop up to the second baseman sent it into the bottom of the third.

Cornerstone got just one hit in the bottom of the third, as the Warriors of Rochester Christian saw their way to another run in the top of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double. The Warriors led 4-0.

Michael Ruiz singled that brought John Caliendo home to score the first run of game one for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fourth inning. The score would remain 4-1 going into the fifth inning as RCU wrapped up the bottom of the fourth.

It was a busy top of the fifth as Rochester Christian saw two runners home off of a double that made it 7-1. An error by Cornerstone saw two more runners round the diamond, the Warriors remained on top 10-1. A strong RBI single by the Warriors added two more runs to the total as Cornerstone headed into the bottom of the fifth down 12-1.

The bottom of the fifth saw Drew Goodman score off of a Broedy Dunham double. The Golden Eagles were able to get three more runners home in the bottom of the fifth inning. Steve Hoeksema made it home on a John Caliendo single, Broedy Dunham scored off of a walk Thomas Rupp, and finally Michael Ruiz grounded out but sent Nate Jackson home to score the fifth run for Cornerstone.

The Golden Eagles were not done yet, as they added six more runs to their total in the bottom of the sixth inning. Broedy Dunham singled to right field that brought Drew Goodman and Andrew Eley home to score. Steve Hoeksema scored and Broedy Dunham made it home on a wild pitch to make it 12-9.

JT Ten Eyck and Michael Ruiz rounded out the inning, as they made it home thanks to an Andrew Eley single and Drew Goodman walking thanks to getting hit by the pitch.

The final run of the game sealed the win in game one for Rochester Christian in the top of the seventh. An RBI single made it 13-11 as the Warriors won game one.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 10 Rochester Christian – 8

The Warriors opened up the game in the top of the first inning of game two with an RBI double that made it 1-0. They kept it going with two more runs in the inning that put them up 3-0.

Cornerstone made it onto the board in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Ruiz made it to third base thanks to an error from center field, as Luke Griffith made it home. Corbin Westerkamp singled to left field that sent Michael Ruiz home to score the second run for Cornerstone as they remained behind 3-2.

Four runs in the top of the third inning for the Warriors put them up 6-2 early on in game two of the day. Cornerstone was able to pull one run back in the bottom of the third as John Caliendo grounded out to third base and Steve Hoeksema scored.

The Warriors broke the silence created in the fourth inning, as they added one more to their total in the top of the fifth inning that made it 7-3.

The Warriors were held to no runs in the top of the sixth, as two runners were left on base thanks to a swinging strikeout. Cornerstone looked to get it rolling in the bottom of the sixth inning as a single by Michael Ruiz sent Bryce Smith home. Andrew Eley stole third and scored on an error that tied up the contest 7-7. The Golden Eagles would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a wild pitch that saw Drew Goodman score 8-7.

Rochester Christian tied it right back up in the top of the seventh inning thanks to an RBI ground out. The score was level 8-8.

Michael Ruiz stepped up to the batter's box and sent one out of the park to bat in Luke Griffith and score the homerun for Cornerstone who retook the lead 10-8.

Cornerstone kept the Warriors quiet in the top of the eighth inning and set their bats ablaze in the bottom of the inning. Bryce Smith singled, which sent Broedy Dunham home to extend the lead 11-8. A triple by Luke Griffith saw Bryce Smith score as well. Thomas Rupp reached base thanks to an error by the third baseman, and Luke Griffith took advantage to run home and make it 13-8.

The bottom of the eighth saw its end but not before Andrew Eley had the RBI single that sent two runners home in Michael Ruiz and Thomas Rupp. Cornerstone held the lead going into the ninth inning 15-8.

Cornerstone held the Warriors to just one run in the top of the ninth inning, as Cornerstone split the series with a game two win of 15-9.
