Baseball Finishes the Day on Top in Doubleheader Against Lourdes

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Baseball went back to work in a cold windy day in Grand Rapids hosting the Lourdes Gray Wolves for a doubleheader of WHAC play. With Lourdes closing their doors at the end of the year this makes for the final regular season battle with the Gray Wolves. Both games were opposites as Lourdes ran away with game one, but Cornerstone ended on the high note with the game two victory. 
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 4 Lourdes – 5
  • Connor Comiskey led off well for the Golden Eagles collecting two strikeouts and holding Lourdes scoreless after the 1st inning. 
  • The slow start to the offense continued in the 2nd and 3rd inning as the bats remained cold on this chilly day in Grand Rapids. 
  • Lourdes was able to draw blood first in this matchup with a pair of hits driving in the first score of the day for the Gray Wolves. 
  • The top of the 5th belonged to Lourdes once again as they managed to put together a flurry of hits to secure another run and take a 2-0 lead in the ball game. 
  • Cornerstone had no answer for the Gray Wolves in another inning where Lourdes piled on the runs taking a 5-0 lead over the Golden Eagles. 
  • The Golden Eagles came to life in the bottom of the 5th as they saw Andrew Meny send a double into right field score two runs and give Cornerstone some hope. 
  • Corbin Westerkamp and John Caliendo also connected well with two strong swings that drove in one run each as the score was 5-4 headed to the 7th inning.
  • Lourdes was able to find the outs needed to secure the game one victory 5-4 over Cornerstone. 
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 15 Defiance – 5
  • Game two started at a much quicker pace for both squads as each team scored a run to earn a 1-1 score after the 1stinning. 
  • Michael Ruiz secured the lone RBI of the 2nd inning which boosted Cornerstone into a 2-1 lead thanks to Broedy Dunham finding home plate. 
  • The Gray Wolves were able to tie things up at 2-2 after the top of the 3rd inning but Corbin Westerkamp drove a deep ball into center field to earn Cornerstone the 3-2 advantage in this tight WHAC matchup. 
  • Another inning another run scored for the visiting Gray Wolves as they continued to be consistent on the offensive side of the ball. 
  • The Golden Eagles opened the flood gates in the bottom of the 4th as three quick bases were found with strong plate control from the Golden Eagles. 
  • Drew Goodman found the critical swing to secure an RBI double and move CU into a 5-3 advantage which outs still to find for Lourdes. 
  • Andrew Meny and Nate Jackson found a flurry of hits lead to a 9-3 lead for the Golden Eagles as they began to run away with game two of the doubleheader. 
  • Bobby Kelly found the crucial pitches in the top of the 5th to hold Lourdes scoreless despite having the bases loaded. 
  • Drew Goodman and Andrew Meny both secured RBIs to extend the Cornerstone led to 11-3 with the bats hot. 
  • Corbin Westerkamp put out a standup double into the center field fence as he drove in yet another run with Cornerstone extending their lead to 13-3 as we inch closer to a mercy rule after the 5th inning. 
  • The top of the 6th proved to help the Gray Wolves as they drove in two runs with a drive over the center fielders head that made the game 13-5. 
  • In the bottom of the 6th the Golden Eagles took advantage of a flurry of wild pitches from the Lourdes pitcher that saw Drew Goodman drive in another runoff a sac fly. 
  • Andrew Meny singled into left field to drive home their second run of the inning as Cornerstone regained a 10-run lead up 15-5. 
  • Three outs stood between Cornerstone and a mercy rule as we entered the top of the 7th inning. 
  • Michael Ruiz smooth play sealed the victory to take down the Gray Wolves in just 7 innings and split the day. 
By the Numbers:
10 – Drew Goodman and Corbin Westerkamp combined for 10 total RBI's on the day. 
3/3 – Nate Jackson highlighted game two with 3 hits and 3 RBI's. 
5/4 – Andrew Meny also led the Golden Eagles with 5 hits and 4 RBI's. 

What's Next?
The Golden Eagles prepare for their next matchup against rival Aquinas College on Friday, April 3rd for a 1:00 p.m. start to the doubleheader.
