Baseball Split the First Day of the Series Against Aquinas

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Baseball split day one of the series against Aquinas with a 2-0 loss in game one and a 13-9 win in game two. Mason Leckrone pitched 3.2 shutout innings in game two while both Nate Jackson and Broedy Dunham recorded three RBIs. Drew Goodman led CU with six hits on the day and scored three times. The Golden Eagles face Aquinas to close out the series on Saturday, April 4th with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 0 Aquinas – 2
  • Aquinas got the scoring started as a single in the bottom of the first brought a run into score to give the Saints a 1-0 lead early.
  • AQ added on to their lead in the bottom of the second as another two out single drove in a run and made it a 2-0 game.
  • CU you got their first baserunner in the fourth as Drew Goodman hit a one out single followed by a Luke Griffith walk, but they would be left stranded as AQ got out of the inning.
  • Cornerstone got a pair of two out singles in the top of the sixth off the bats of Drew Goodman and Andrew Meny, but the courtesy run would get picked off to end the Golden Eagles opportunity.
  • Steve Hoeksema continued to deal keeping Aquinas scoreless after the first two innings and despite getting three runners on base in the seventh, CU failed to score and dropped game one of the series to AQ.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 13 Aquinas – 9
  • The Cornerstone offense got rolling to begin game two as Broedy Dunham tripled to drive in two runs followed by a single off the bat of Corbin Westerkamp to drive in Dunham and give CU an early 3-0 lead.
  • Cornerstone added on in the second as Andrew Meny singled with the bases loaded to drive in a run before Nate Jackson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and walks from Thomas Rupp and Broedy Dunham made it a 7-0 game.
  • The Golden Eagles got another run across in the third as Drew Goodman singled to bring Bryce Smith around to score.
  • Aquinas got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a single which made it an 8-1 CU lead.
  • Nate Jackson brought another run across in the fifth for Cornerstone with a single to centerfield that scored Drew Goodman.
  • Aquinas broke out for six runs in the bottom half of the inning off a single, double, walk and a hit by pitch to cut the Cornerstone lead to two.
  • CU made it a three-run lead in the top of the sixth as a sac bunt by Andrew Eley brought Michael Ruiz into score.
  • The Saints moved within one on a fielder's choice and an error to make it a 10-9 game.
  • CU responded in the seventh with a single off the bat of Thomas Rupp that drove in Nate Jackson.
  • Cornerstone made it 13-9 in the eighth as Nate Jackson hit a sacrifice fly that brought Drew Goodman in to score.
  • Mason Leckrone shut down the Saints in the eight and ninth innings to secure the game two win for Cornerstone.
 
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles face Aquinas to close out the series on Saturday, April 4th with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
