Grand Rapids, Mich. – Softball sweeps the doubleheader against Defiance led by a no-hitter from
Kara Sandberg in game two.
Sam Timmer hit a home run in game one picking up two RBIs while
Taylor Zwagerman and
Rylee Stephenson each collected two hits and drove in two runs in game two. The Golden Eagles face Lourdes for senior day on Saturday, April 11th with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 8 Defiance – 5
- The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Kaylee Misialek and Paige Liddell scored on an error to give CU a 2-0 lead.
- Defiance tied the game in the third with a two-run homerun to center field.
- Cornerstone retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Sam Timmer launched a two-run homer over the left field wall along with three more runs scoring on an error, a ground out and a single by Alexis Ashbay to extend CU's lead to 7-2.
- In the fourth CU added another as Morgan Jenkins scored on a fielder's choice to make it 8-2.
- The Yellow Jackets answered in the fifth as they scored a run on an error followed by a homer to left center to put them within three.
- Despite Defiance loading the bases in the seventh, Kara Sandberg shut the door and secured the 8-5 win for Cornerstone.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 10 Defiance – 0
- Cornerstone got the scoring started in game two as Morgan Jenkins hit a one-out triple and was drove in by Sam Timmer as she hit a sacrifice fly.
- The Golden Eagles added to their lead on the second as an infield single by Anna Griffioen brought Rylee Stephenson into score.
- In the bottom of the third CU extended their lead as Sam Timmer scored on a ground out along with Taylor Zawgerman scoring on a single by Kaylee Misialek to give Cornerstone a 4-0 lead.
- Taylor Zwagerman doubled down the left field line to drive in two runs in the bottom of fourth, followed by another double by Rylee Stephenson to bring in Zwagerman and make it a seven-run lead.
- Alexis Ashbay hit a single to left center that scored Maddi Veersma and walked off the game as CU won 8-0 and secured the sweep and a no-hitter for Kara Sandberg.
