Softball Completes Sweep Over Lourdes to Highlight Senior Day

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Softball hosted the Lourdes Gray Wolves as they celebrated their five Seniors in today's matchup. Taylor Zwagerman dominated the day in both games with solid play from the plate to first base. Cornerstone move to 21-14 (WHAC 12-6) on the season as they prepare for their final doubleheader of the season on the road against Lawrence Tech on Wednesday, April 15 beginning at 3:00 p.m. 
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Lourdes – 0
  • Lourdes opened the top of the first with a strong double into left center field, but the Golden Eagles defense collected three quick outs to get out of the inning scoreless. 
  • The Gray Wolves secured two strikeouts to end a quick 1st inning. 
  • Addi Herbig answered the call in the 2nd inning with a pair of strikeouts to keep Cornerstone level in game one. 
  • Taylor Zwagerman opened the bottom of the 2nd with a line drive up the center to secure her first base of the day, but the inning finished at 0-0. 
  • The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning with an Anna Griffioen solo shot homer into right field. 
  • Cornerstone closed out a risky inning as Lourdes loaded the bases, but Addi Herbig collected another pair of strikeouts to hold the Gray Wolves scoreless. 
  • Alayna Meade and Taylor Zwagerman earned back-to-back doubles to give Cornerstone a 2-0 lead with only one out claimed by Lourdes in the bottom of the 4th.
  • The Golden Eagles held three runners on base in the remainder of the inning, but they were unable to extend the lead after the 4th
  • Senior Taylor Zwagerman continued her strong day with a line out and tag to close the inning in a solo double-play. 
  • Grace Paling went to work from the mound to continue the scoreless game for Lourdes as we enter the bottom of the 6th inning. 
  • Kaitlyn Cain closed the contest well for the Golden Eagles highlighted by a right field diving catch to earn a 2-0 game one victory.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 5 Lourdes – 2
  • Kara Sandberg kicked off the second game of the day with a strikeout to end the top of the 1st inning for Cornerstone. 
  • The Golden Eagles saw Kara Sandberg end another inning from the mound as Lourdes left two runners on base once again. 
  • Cornerstone opened the bottom of the 2nd inning with a double from Taylor Zwagerman and a single from Rylee Stephenson that drove home the first score of game two. 
  • The Golden Eagles loaded the bases on the Gray Wolves after multiple errors were committed which set up Anna Griffioen for a three run RBI shot into left field helping CU to a 4-0 advantage. 
  • Adriana Sackett singled in the bottom of the 3rd as the only hit as Cornerstone continued to move through game two with a healthy lead. 
  • Gabby Mecca led off the 4th for the Golden Eagles with a strike into right field to earn the first base of the inning for the home team. 
  • The Golden Eagles loaded the bases once again and took advantage of poor pitching from Lourdes as they scored off a walk to extend the lead to 5-0. 
  • The Gray Wolves were able to escape the 4th inning after minimal damage looking to still find their first run of the day. 
  • Lourdes finally found their first run of the day in the top of the 5th with a shot straight past the mound. 
  • The Gray Wolves continued to threaten as they opened the 6th with a double into left field.
  • Lourdes added another run in the inning to close the top of the 6th as they looked to inch closer to the Golen Eagles late.  
  • The Golden Eagles were able to find the outs needed to end the contest and take game two 5-2. 
By the Numbers:
13 – The Golden Eagles pitching crew combined for 13 total strikeouts across both games. 
5 – Taylor Zwagerman led the Golden Eagles with five total hits on the day. 
1 – Anna Griffioen hit the one home run of the day with a bomb to right field. 

What's Next?
The Golden Eagles prepare for their final doubleheader of the season in a road trip to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday, April 15 starting at 3:00 p.m.
