Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After falling to Siena Heights in five sets on the road in the first meeting of the season, the Cornerstone volleyball team returned home to Mol Arena and posted a sweep over the Saints on Wednesday night. The 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 victory lifts head coach Ryan Campbell and his team to 19-8 on the season and 10-6 in league play. CU will host the Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic this weekend in which they will play four matches in two days.
Chelsea Lake (JR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) posted her fourth straight double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs while Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) chipped in with 11 kills and a match high 18 digs. Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.) finished with 33 assists while the team posted 14 block assists in the 3-set win.
CU jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead in the opening set and after Siena Heights rallied to tie it at 14-14, the Golden Eagles used kills by five different players down the stretch to post a 25-18 win. The second was back and forth with the Saints holding a lead until three straight points with kills from Lake and Hope Leppink put CU up 12-11. Cornerstone extended the lead to as many as four (21-17) and ultimately won the set 25-23 on an attack error from SHU.
Despite falling behind 5-1 in the third set, Cornerstone then closed out the match with a convincing run led by the strong serving of Amber Carmean (JR/Fruitport, Mich.).
CU will stay at home for the weekend as they host the annual Aquinas/Cornerstone Classic in which they will face four opponents beginning Friday at 5 p.m. vs. Spring Arbor University.
