FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In their first appearance of the 2014-15 season, the No. 24 ranked women's basketball team had their hands full on the road against the No. 1 ranked team and defending national champions, Saint Francis (Ind.). CU fought to the end but the host Cougars finished with a 63-50 victory to send the Golden Eagles to their season opening loss. Cornerstone will look to rebound on Saturday when they face Trinity International on the road.
Game Flow
The two teams combined for 53 fouls and the pace of play and final score was definitely affected by that. CU committed 29 of those, allowed the host Cougars to own a 22-16 edge at the charity stripe. USF controlled most of the play in the opening half and went into the break leading 26-21.
The Cougars then came out in the second and jumped on a foul-riddled CU team and upped their lead to 52-29 at one point before watching the Golden Eagles get back to within 10. Saint Francis, behind the play of Akyah Taylor (17 points and 13 rebounds) held off the rally for the 13-point win.
Say What?
"I thought for our first appearance of the season, on the road against a very difficult opponent, we played pretty well. Fouls hurt us big time but we held them in check in the areas where they have done really well so far this season. We can work on that and move forward" – Head coach Katie Mattera
