Big second half for WBB leads to 71-42 win over UNOH

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 8-0 lead only to see the Racers tie the game up with 3:28 left in the first half but Cornerstone finished the half with a 9-0 run to go into the locker room up 32-23.  The two teams went back and forth for the first few minutes of the second half but the Golden Eagles broke the game open with a 16-0 run over a 7 minute stretch to put the game out of reach.  The win vaults the Golden Eagles into the WHAC semifinals on Saturday at Davenport. Tip is set for 1 p.m.



Game Flow

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick lead scoring the first 8 points of the game today against the Racers of Northwestern Ohio.  Jill Hendrickson (JR/Ada, Mich.) scored the first 4 points and Tanner Hostetler (JR/Archbold, Ohio) scored the next 4 to put the Golden Eagles up 8-0 with 15:39 on the clock.  Cornerstone would maintain that kind of lead for the next 10 minutes or so before the Racers made a 10-2 run over the next 2 ½ minutes of play to tie the score at 23-23 with 3:28 left in the half.  Cornerstone responded with a 9-0 run to finish the half with a 32-23 lead.  Jill Hendrickson had a big half scoring 11 points to go with 8 rebounds for Cornerstone.  The two teams played even over the first couple of minutes of the second half before Cornerstone made a 16-0 run over a seven minute period to put the game out of reach.  Cornerstone led 53-28 with 11:41 left in the game.  The Racers would get no closer than 29 points over the last 10 minutes of play.  The Golden Eagles got to play a lot of players and were able to rest some people down the stretch.  Jill Hendrickson recorded her 15 double double of the season in just 27 minutes of play.  Jill Steenwyk (JR/Sparta, Mich.) had 12 points and 5 rebounds.

"We were invested in each other and we had a focus to have fun together as we played our last home game.  We wanted to finish strong and that is what we did." said Coach Mattera.

By the Numbers

59/22 – Cornerstone shot 59.1% while keeping the Racers to just 22.2% from the floor in the 2nd half of play which proved to be the difference in the game. 

81/50 – The Golden Eagles made 81.8% (18-22) of their fouls shot while the Racers made only 50% (2-4) from the charity stripe. 

Up Next

Cornerstone will hit the road on Saturday and will travel across town to take on top seed and #2 ranked Davenport at 1:00 p.m.
