Women’s Hoops set to host Calvin and Concordia this week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles will return home for the first time since October 31 to host Calvin College and Concordia University. Cornerstone will host NCAA Division III opponent Calvin on Wednesday at 7 pm., for their first meeting since 2009. The Cardinals of Concordia will then come to town on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the conference home opener. Both games will have live video, audio, and stats available at cugoldeneagles.com/watch.

Scouting Calvin
Calvin College is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) at the NCAA Division III level. Calvin's short trip down the Beltline to take on Cornerstone will be the 2017-18 season opener for them. In 2016-17, the Knights went 22-6, 12-4 MIAA under first year head coach Chuck Winkelman. Winkelman returns for his second season, with a young roster that sees six freshman and six sophomores. Seniors Ali Spayde and Bre Luurtsema are the key returners for Calvin statistically. Spayde is the leading returner in scoring with 16.6 PPG while Bre Luurtsema is the leading returner in rebounds with 6.6 RPG and assists with 3.6 APG.

Scouting Concordia
The Cardinals have gotten off to a good start, going 3-1 in the early season with wins over both NCAA Division II Saginaw Valley State and NAIA receiving votes Taylor University. The senior leadership of Kari Borowiak has led CUAA so far this year, as she leads the team with both 18.8 PPG and 7.0 APG. In 2016-17, the Cardinals finished with an 18-13, 11-11 WHAC record to finish tied with the Golden Eagles in the WHAC. Before the Cardinals take on Cornerstone on Saturday, they will play their conference home opener vs. No. 22 Siena Heights on Wednesday night.

History vs. Opponents
Cornerstone has had a short history vs. Calvin, playing them just two times since the 2000-01 season. In those two games, CU has gone 1-1 most recently losing 69-50 in 2009. Against Concordia, Cornerstone has had a long history where they have dominated of late. In the last eight matchups, CU has gone 7-1 vs. Concordia. Since head Coach Katie Mattera took over, Cornerstone is 7-4 against CUAA.

Sheridan Nears Top 10
Junior Jesse Sheridan continues to tear it up on the offensive end for the Golden Eagles, as she is now just 107 points away from cracking the program's top 10 career scoring list. Sheridan has tallied 1,161 points in her career to date. Julie Kosten, who played from 1993-97, currently sits in 10th place in program history for career points with 1,268. The all-time leader in points for the Golden Eagles is Cathy Velzen, who tallied 1,756 points between 2001-05. Jesse Sheridan has already become the fastest player to ever reach 1,000 points in Golden Eagle history, along with ranking fifth all-time for points in a season with 551 in 2016-17.

100 Career Wins
Head Coach Katie Mattera now sits just five wins away from being the third coach in Cornerstone history to hit the century mark. Mattera is 95-68 in her sixth season in charge of the Golden Eagles. Under her reign, Cornerstone has tallied two 22 win seasons, one NAIA tournament qualification, and four top five finishes in the WHAC. The all-time leader in wins for CU is Carla Fles who Mattera took over for in 2012-13. Fles was recently inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame for her outstanding playing and coaching career.

Statistically Speaking
As a team the Golden Eagles rank top 10 in the NAIA in two statistical categories. CU is sixth in total scoring with 516 total points, and ninth in total assists with 115. Individually, Jesse Sheridan's 135 points ranks third in the NAIA. Cass Vredevoogd is 12th in total rebounding with 48 and Lizzy Otten is 12th in total assists with 28.

WHAC Home Openers
Cornerstone has won each of their last six WHAC home openers, never losing under head coach Katie Mattera. The last conference home opener that the Golden Eagles lost came to Indiana Tech in the 2010-11 season. Since the 2000-01 season, CU is 16-1 in conference home openers.
