GRAND RAPIDS - Mich. – The Golden Eagles will play their fourth and fifth games of the season against Crossroads League opponents as they travel to No. 14 Saint Francis of Indiana on Wednesday and Bethel College on Saturday. Wednesday's game will start at 3 p.m. in Hutzell Athletic Center and Saturday's game will start at 1 p.m. in Weikamp Athletic Center. The Golden Eagles got their first win of the season going 1-2 on the week with a victory over Grace Christian and a pair of losses to No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan and receiving votes Huntington. Cornerstone is now 1-4 on the year as they will get set to play their last two non-conference games before WHAC play begins next week.
Yonkers in the Winning Column
Head coach
Jessica Yonkers got her first win as a collegiate coach on Monday in a 64-63 thriller at Grace Christian University. Yonkers is now 1-4 to start her collegiate coaching career, as she looks to continue to get the Golden Eagles back on the winning track.
Nyboer Feasting
Sophomore
Shelby Nyboer continues to dominate in the post for the Golden Eagles in the early season. Nyboer set new career highs with 22 points and 16 rebounds on Monday night at Grace Christian. Nyboer leads the team in both categories this season at 13.6 PPG and 8.0 RPG.
NAIA Top25/RV Struggles
The Golden Eagles struggled with two of the nation's best teams this past week, losing by a combined 80 points against Crossroads League opponents No. 15 Indiana Wesleyan and receiving votes Huntington. The losses brought Cornerstone to an 0-4 start to the season for the second consecutive year.
Scouting Saint Francis
The Cougars of Saint Francis have started the 2018-19 campaign with a 1-1 record, defeating Doane University 82-49 and losing to No. 1 Concordia (Neb.) 84-55. Saint Francis was selected 14th in the NAIA DII Preseason Poll after finishing 17-14 last season and returning a large sum of their roster for 2018-19. The Cougars are one of the best three point shooting teams and passing teams in the country, making 9.5 three's per contest while tallying 18.5 assists per game. Junior forward Kara Gerka leads USF in scoring through the first two games, averaging 16.0 points per game to go along with a team best 7.0 rebounds per game. Junior Savannah Buck ranks fourth in the NAIA in assists this season as well averaging 7.5 in the first two games of the season.
Scouting Bethel
Bethel College has opened the season with a 3-0 record, defeating Roosevelt, Holy Cross College, and Ohio Christian this season. The Pilots will take on WHAC foe Aquinas College on Tuesday before hosting the Golden Eagles on Saturday. Bethel has been an offensive powerhouse early in the season averaging 74.3 PPG while holding opponents to just 58.7 PPG. Sophomore Kelsey Brickner and Senior Kamala Glenn each average 16+ points per game to lead the Pilots this season.
