Last Week Recap
A grueling four game week took its toll on the Golden Eagles, with CU dropping all four of their matchups against stiff competition. In their first game of the week, CU dropped a tough one 71-45 against #RV Indiana Wesleyan University. Cornerstone had no answer for Dayton Groninger of IWU, who
put up a career high 27 points and added six assists. For the Golden Eagles,
Kennedy Helderop led the way with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Cornerstone had little time to recover, with Spring Arbor rolling in the following night. The Golden Eagle offense couldn't muster up much of anything, shooting 16.4% from the field. With difficulties on the offensive end, strong defense
kept CU in the game before eventually falling 59-34. Fatigue looked to be a contributing factor as back-to-backs are taxing on any team.
The Golden Eagles were able to get a day off before heading out to Upland, Indiana to face #15 Taylor University. Cornerstone started slow but rallied valiantly in the fourth quarter. Although they fell 76-67, CU's second half was a major positive, as the Golden Eagles held Taylor to 24.2% shooting in the third and fourth quarter.
CU wrapped up their four-game week with another road matchup, this time facing #RV Huntington University. Another difficult first half left CU with a large hill to climb offensively, trailing 45-22. Cornerstone was able to even out the flow of the game in the second half but ultimately fell 77-52. In the loss,
Rebekah Crosby had a career day, notching 18 points and 5 rebounds.
Scouting #13 University of Saint Francis (Ind.)
Cornerstone will face another ranked opponent this week in the Cougars of Saint Francis. The 13th ranked Cougars are 2-0 on the season, outscoring opponents by an average of 29 points a contest. Offensively, Saint Francis is led by the tandem of Lauren McBryar and Kara Gerka. McBryar is coming off an excellent first week, which saw her named Crossroads League Player of the Week. The junior guard is averaging 23 points a game and is shooting 52.6% from deep. Meanwhile, senior forward Kara Gerka is averaging 15.5 points per contest on 12-22 shooting for the season. Cornerstone will have to look for ways to limit the 1-2 punch of McBryar and Gerka if they hope to pull off the upset.
Scouting Trinity Christian College
The Trolls of Trinity Christian have started the season 1-3 and will be bringing a hungry team into Mol Arena on Saturday. The Trolls boast a balanced scoring attack, with 5 players averaging over 6 points a game. Trinity's leading scorer is sophomore guard Summer Cramer, who is averaging 10.3 points on the season. Offensively, Trinity will look to spread the floor, as they have attempted an average of 23 three pointers a game. Cramer leads the team in that department, shooting 8-15 from deep and 15-31 from the floor overall. The Golden Eagle defense will have to close out hard and rebound well in order to limit Trinity's offensive attack.
