Home opener, WHAC opener on tap for Softball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles will play their first games in Michigan this week. The team will start a busy eight-game week on Tuesday with the home opener against Cleary before traveling to Rochester to open up WHAC play on Wednesday. In addition to live stats, every home game this season will also have live video available (weather permitting) through the Cornerstone Sports Network.

Quick recap of last week:
Cornerstone traveled to Illinois for a doubleheader against Trinity International on Thursday. The Golden Eagles recorded a season-high 14 hits in a come-from-behind 10-7 victory in game one and fell 7-4 in game two. The teams are scheduled to meet again on April 23 at Cornerstone. (Full recap)

Scouting Cleary
  • The Cougars have an 11-5 overall record, but haven't played since March 8
  • Kaitlin Dormire leads the team with a .422 batting average and a .711 slugging percentage.
  • Kelly Schram leads the team with 20 hits, nine of which for extra bases, and 17 RBI.
  • Natalie O'reilly leads the team in the circle with a 2.57 ERA and five complete games in six starts.
  • The Cougars split a doubleheader with the Golden Eagles in 2016 before sweeping a doubleheader in 2017.
  • Cleary and Cornerstone will play each other in WHAC competitions on April 10 at Cleary.  

Scouting Rochester
  • The Warriors have a 3-11 overall record.
  • The Golden Eagles swept doubleheaders against the Warriors in each of the past two seasons.
  • Mackenzy Muncy leads the team with a .368 batting average and six RBI.
  • Alexis Evans leads the team in the circle with a 2.33 ERA.

Notes about the Golden Eagles
  • Freshman pitcher Ashley Loera came in to pitch in relief on Thursday at Trinity International in game one. She pitched the final six innings after CU fell behind 7-1 in the third inning. Loera did not surrender a run and allowed only four hits to earn her third win of the season in the circle thanks to nine unanswered runs for CU.  
  • Sophomore Sierra Sanchez tied a career high in hits and RBI with three apiece in game one against Trinity International. In the top of the 9th inning, Sanchez drove in two runs with a triple to propel CU to a 10-7 victory in extra innings.
  • Red-shirt freshman Jocelyn Hernandez leads the team with a .709 slugging percentage and 10 RBI. Hernandez hit her first career home run on March 8 against Saint Francis before hitting a pair of home runs on March 9 vs. Calumet St. Joseph.
  • In 14 at bats, senior Moriah Wilke has seven hits with five RBI and six runs.
