TRIO OF SWEEPS

The Golden Eagles opened a long-awaited bittersweet season just about as well as a team possibly could with three sweeps against three non-conference opponents to move to 3-0 to begin the year. The season opened at home on Friday night in a highly anticipated matchup with a solid Thomas More program where the Golden Eagles earned a 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 win. The very next day, Cornerstone hit the road for the Judson/Trinity International Crossover where they opened the day with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-14 win against the Eagles and followed that with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-13 win against the host Trojans. Through three matches, Cornerstone is hitting .251 as a team while recording 22 service aces for an average of 2.4 per set.

CU will play two more matches this week, as they travel back to Illinois for a non-conference game with Trinity Christian before returning home to open the conference season in Mol Arena against Lourdes.

BAILEY CUMMINGS STRONG START

Bailey Cummings

Bailey Cummings has gotten off to a strong start, leading the team with 26 kills and eight service aces through the first three games, while hitting .264.

Bailey is the current career leader in kills on the active roster with 837 in her career. Fellow senior Jackie Stanko sits right behind her at 750 career kills.

STARTING 3-0

The Golden Eagles have begun the year at 3-0 and it has been a few years since getting off to this good of a start. The last time CU won three straight to begin the season was in 2017 where they won five before falling in five sets to NAIA no. seven Westmont during a trip to California.

The longest season opening winning streak in program history dates all the way back to 2004, when CU won 13 in a row to begin the year.

NEARING MILESTONES

WVB Seniors

Bailey Cummings - Senior Bailey Cummings sits at 837 career kills and is looking to become the next Golden Eagle to crack the 1,000 threshold. With 282 more kills, Cummings will crack the top 10 in program history and pass Emily Hollemans.

Kayla Clark - Senior setter Kayla Clark surpassed 2500 career assists this weekend and now has 2538. She needs just 462 more to become the sixth Golden Eagle in program history to hit 3k, and 824 more to pass Holly Punches for fifth on the all-time list.

Jackie Stanko - Senior Jackie Stanko has recorded 329 total blocks in her career, putting her just three away from the CU top 10 list. Once she records three more, she will pass well known Cornerstone volleyball alum Allison Sagraves (Park), who is also the wife of Cornerstone Athletic Director, Aaron Sagraves.

Megan Lenhart - Head Coach Megan Lenhart is only in her second season at CU but is nearing the 250 career coaching wins mark after recording 209 at Davenport and 18 so far at Cornerstone.

Trolls

Scouting Trinity Christian

Trinity Christian will open their new season with the home match vs. Cornerstone on Tuesday evening. The Trolls come off a strong season of 28-8, 17-1 CCAC where they won both the regular season and conference tournament championships before being axed in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament by IU-Kokomo in four sets.

TCC welcomes a new coach this season in Becky Eller, but  returns their leading attacker, Libero, and blocker to the team this year.

Scouting Lourdes

Lourdes is looking to return to their glory days after a tough couple of seasons with a young roster that has gained some valuable experience over the last two years. Lourdes last won the WHAC Title in 2016 and have slowly descended down the standings, finishing seventh in the WHAC last season with a 14-16, 10-10 conference record.

This season, the Gray Wolves have played one match, where they fell at home in five sets to Saint Xavier.

Last season Lourdes had just two seniors on the roster, so they return nearly everyone this year. Outside hitter Kylee McBride was the team leader in kills last season with 318, averaging 2.89 per set.
