Last Time Out
Cornerstone last played on Saturday, December 18 at Spring Arbor and fell by seven, 60-53. The Cougars hit eight threes on just 18 field goals which powered them past CU and dropped them to 3-10 on the year. Cornerstone will go back to a two game week this week as they take on two more non-conference foes in Grace Christian and Davenport.Â
Winless vs. the Mitten
Head Coach Jessica Yonkers and the Golden Eagles have three wins this year and they have seen their winning success come against teams outside the state of Michigan as they are 3-4 in out of state games. Against in-state opponents Cornerstone is 0-6. CU has a chance to break that mold this week with two road games against Michigan opponents.Â
End of Non-Conference Play
Cornerstone will conclude non-conference play this week with Grace Christian and Davenport. Once January hits, CU will have only WHAC games remaining with seven in January and six in February. Two of Cornerstone's three wins this year are in non-conference games.Â
Scouting Grace Christian
Head Coach Ashley Xiong Vang is in her first year as the Head Coach with Grace Christian after serving as the Associate Head Coach and she has led the Tigers to a 6-4 record overall and an impressive 5-0 conference record as a member of the NCCAA DII. Grace has dropped two of their last three with losses to Indiana Tech and Bethel two teams that Cornerstone has seen this season. Ashley Hoek has been a standout for GCU this year, averaging a double-double at 14.3 PPG and 12.4 RPG. Guard Emily Libey has added a team high 16.1 PPG as well to power the offensive for Grace Christian.Â
Scouting Davenport
Davenport continues to try to find their foothold in NCAA DII as they have an Interim Head Coach this season in Travis Schuba. Since joining NCAA DII, the Panthers have yet to see a winning season, with their most wins coming in 2017-18 with eight. In 2021-22, Davenport has yet to find the win column with an 0-11 overall record. The veteran team is struggling to score, averaging just 54.5 points per game and being outscored by 21.8 on average. The guards Toni Grace and Loni Sales have been the two offensive highlights, each averaging over nine points per game.
