Rivalry week highlights pair of matches for Women's Volleyball

2/1/2021 11:16:00 AM

Brooke Nicholson

Best start since 2017

Cornerstone won two more matches last week with a 3-0 sweep at Trinity Christian and a 3-1 win in the WHAC opener vs. Lourdes to improve to 5-0. CU is 5-0 for the first time since 2017, and with a win at Aquinas could get off to their best start since the 2007 season. Bailey Cummings and Alexis Angus led the way for the Golden Eagles offensively, while the blocking of Brooke Nicholson and Jackie Stanko was crucial in the WHAC Opener.

This week CU will take on the preseason favorite to win the conference in Aquinas and Indiana Tech both on the road. The week will begin with a 5 p.m. Tuesday match with Aquinas before an 8 p.m. Friday match with Indiana Tech.

Clark/Nicholson shine in WHAC opener

Clark

Senior Kayla Clark did a little bit of everything in Friday's WHAC Opening win against Lourdes, recording 50 assists, seven aces, and 14 digs. All three are season highs for the senior, and seven aces is a career high. Clark now has 2626 career assists, continuing her push for the 3000 mark.

Brooke Nicholson

Senior Brooke Nicholson also had an outstanding outing defensively for the Golden Eagles in the WHAC Opener recording eight total blocks, all of them assisted. This is a season high and the most for any Cornerstone player this season.

Nicholson leads the team with 15 blocks through the first five games this year.

Stanko moves to 10th in program history

Stanko

Senior Jackie Stanko recorded 10 total blocks this weekend to crack the top 10 in program history with 339. Stanko knocks Director of Athletics Aaron Sagraves wife, Allison Sagraves (Park) off the list and is 60 away from passing Ellie Van Laar who sits in ninth with 398.

Trading Sidelines

Ryan Campbell

Cornerstone enters year two of taking on Aquinas with the all-time winningest coach in CU program history on the other sideline. AQ Head Coach Ryan Campbell spent 10 seasons at Cornerstone before taking a job with Ferris State and then Aquinas and won 264 games at CU. Last season when the two teams met in the first year of Campbell being on the opposing sideline, the two teams split the season series each winning their game at home.

Aquinas

Scouting Aquinas

Aquinas was selected as the preseason favorite in the WHAC after tying for second place in the conference last season with a 17-13, 14-6 WHAC record.

AQ has played three games this season and won all three as they opened their season with a four set victory over Rochester in a WHAC match, before traveling to Indiana for a pair of games against Governors State and Calumet St. Joseph that were won in straight sets.

Kali Crawford and Kylie Christensen are the two leading returners for AQ at the setter and middle hitter position. Crawford is coming off a 1066 assist season in 2019, while Christensen just recorded her 1,000th career kill this past weekend.

Scouting Indiana Tech

Indiana Tech is one of the few teams that began their season on-time in the fall during the COVID-19 pandemic and has played a total of nine games and gone 7-2 in those contests. Tech is 5-0 in conference play with all five of those WHAC games being played in the fall.

In 2019, Indiana Tech was 26-10, 12-7 WHAC which was good for fifth, but the team returns multiple starters from last season and has added some young talent.

Senior outside Olivia Niekamp leads the team so far this season with 74 kills, while true freshman Andrea Schriver has taken over as the setter and has 150 assists. Schriver is a Grand Rapids native, coming from Sparta High School in northern GR.
