Women’s Basketball Outplayed in a Competitive Contest

Rochester Hills, Mich. – Women's Basketball kept the road games coming with another WHAC game against the Warriors of Rochester Christian University in Rochester Hills, Mich. The Golden Eagles and the Warriors were neck and neck in the first quarter but Cornerstone held a minor lead 14-13. The second quarter was defined by a three minute long 11-0 run by the Warriors who finished out the second period on top 35-29. Rochester maintained a strong lead in the third quarter as Cornerstone struggled to make big stops. The third quarter finished with the Warriors ahead 58-44. The final quarter saw Rochester Christian to a 19-point lead which Cornerstone were unable to cut back as the Warriors took the win on their home court by 17 points 79-62. The Golden Eagles head to the Don Ridler Field House where they will take on the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech on December 17th at 5:30 p.m.

Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 62 Rochester Christian – 79

  • First Quarter

    • Julie Ashbaugh opened the scoring with a layup to make it 2-0 for Cornerstone.

    • Julie Ashbaugh's sixth point of the game extended Cornerstone's lead to four points 7-3.

    • A 4-0 run by the Warriors put them in the lead late into the first quarter 11-7.

    • A good layup by Abi Bandstra put the Golden Eagles up to end the first period 14-13.

  • Second Quarter

    • Cornerstone's Julie Ashbaugh kept it going in the paint with two more points, making it 16-13.

    • An 11-0 run for Rochester Christian saw Cornerstone's lead disappear as the Warriors took hold of the game 24-16.

    • Abby Hall made a big three-pointer to cut the Warrior lead to just four points 25-21.

    • An offensive rebound by Jaxi Long, followed up by a drive into the paint, saw two more points for the senior. Rochester still led 29-24.

    • Halftime would be reached with the six-point lead in favor of the Warriors 35-29.

  • Third Quarter

    • Four more points by Julie Ashbaugh cut the Warrior lead to just five 38-33.

    • Ashbaugh did not let up as her 17th point came midway through the third quarter. Rochester Christian still were on top 44-37.

    • A 10-point lead 48-38 for the Warriors forced Cornerstone into a timeout with about four and a half minutes left to play in the quarter.

    • Another three by Abby Hall sought to keep Cornerstone in the game, but the Warriors kept their offense going 54-41.

    • The third quarter would see its end with Rochester Christian in a dominant lead by 14 points 58-44.

  • Fourth Quarter

    • A good take by Gracie Gortmaker with just under seven minutes left cut the Rochester lead back to 17, 65-48.

    • Two Jaxi Long free throws added a couple more points to the board for the Golden Eagles, but the Warriors remained on top 67-55.

    • Maddie Schuur made her three-point attempt for Cornerstone, but the offense for Rochester Christian did not let up as they still were up 73-62.

    • A 15-point lead with 50 seconds left for Rochester forced a timeout from Cornerstone to try to gain a few more points before the final buzzer.

    • The Warriors would close out the final quarter with a 17-point lead 79-62 as Cornerstone fell in a hard-fought contest.

By the Numbers 

24/7 – Julie Ashbaugh headed up the offense for Cornerstone with 24 points on the day, as well as going up for seven rebounds in the contest.

11/11 – Jaxi Long reached a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

10 – Laura Innerebner hit 10 rebounds on the day in a hard-fought loss to the Warriors.

88.2% – The Golden Eagles continued to see success from the free-throw line as they hit 15 of 17 free throw attempts to go 88.2% from the charity stripe.

The Golden Eagles head to the Don Ridler Field House where they will take on the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech on December 17th at 5:30 p.m.
