Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Junior Chelsea Lake (JR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) finished with a double-double of 15 kills and 20 digs but it was not enough for the Golden Eagles to pull the upset of No. 16 Madonna on Wednesday night. The visiting Crusaders took the first, third and fourth sets to close out the win and drop Cornerstone to 16-8 overall and 7-6 in league play. The Golden Eagles will resume play on Saturday when they face Lawrence Tech and Marygrove in a crossover hosted by UNOH.
The opening two sets were identical to each other with each side of the net posting 25-14 wins. Cornerstone struggled after leading 11-3 in the opener only to see Madonna rally by only allowing three more points the rest of the way to close out CU 25-14.
CU then took a close set in the second and ran away with a 25-14 win of their own but the Crusaders got the all-important third set by a decisive 25-19 score.
Facing a home defeat in the eye, head coach Ryan Campbell and his team held a lead for most of the fourth and had two set points at the end but the Crusaders rallied to win 27-25 and finish the match with the 3-1 win.
Chelsea Lake led all players with 15 kills while hitting at a .341 clip and she also finished with 20 digs. Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) led all players with 31 digs while Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.) posted 35 assists in the loss. Katie Breault had 14 kills for the visiting Crusaders
Cornerstone will resume league play on Saturday when they take part in the first of three crossovers as they will play Lawrence Tech and Marygrove in neutral site matchups played at Northwestern Ohio. Match times are set for Noon and 2:30 p.m.
