Volleyball season comes to close in WHAC Quarterfinals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The up and down season for the Cornerstone Volleyball team was in full view on Friday night as they saw their season come to a close with a 5-set loss to cross-town foe Aquinas College. CU dropped the first set, before rallying to take a 2-1 lead only to see the Saints come back and win the final two to move on to the WHAC semifinals on Saturday. CU ends their season at 27-11 overall.



Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) led the attack for head coach Ryan Campbell as the junior finished with 18 kills while fellow junior Murphy Heyer (JR/Rockford, Mich.) posted 15 kills and senior Cailie Schultz (SR/Rockford, Mich.) 14. Chelsea Lake (JR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) posted a match high 31 digs while Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.) led the way with 42 assists.

Aquinas, the fourth seed in the conference tournament, stormed out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 win. CU then flipped the match with two dominating performances in the second and third winning 25-14, 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead.

With a pair of match point opportunities in the fourth, CU was unable to close the door and the Saints forced the fifth with a 27-25 win. 

Aquinas then got out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth but CU rallied to take eight of the next 11 to lead 8-7 at the side-switch. CU increased their lead to a 3-point cushion at 12-9 and had two more match points at 14-13 and 15-14 but the Saints again would not go down as they scored the final three points for a 17-15 victory.

The season comes to a close for the Golden Eagles with a 27-11 mark as they witnessed the final match of the careers of Cailie Schultz and Libby Webber (SR/Grand Rapids, Mich.).
