MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.. – Head coach Ryan Campbell and the Cornerstone Volleyball team opened the 2015 campaign today down in the sunshine state with a 1-1 mark against No. 3 Missouri Baptist and No. RV Saint Thomas (Fla.). The Golden Eagles will open Friday play with Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) at 9 a.m. before finishing the tourney against No. RV MidAmeria Nazarene (Kan.) at 4:30 p.m.

Match 1 - #3 Missouri Baptist 3, #RV Cornerstone 0 (13-25, 21-25, 18-25)

The opening match of 2015 featured the highest ranked opponent on the CU schedule and the Spartans flexed their muscle early and often in running away with a sweep. Missouri Baptist, who had already played two matches prior to the trip to Miami, won the first set convincingly 25-13 but saw CU put up much more of a fight in the last two sets.

The Spartans hit .330 for the match while the Golden Eagles finished at .086. Cornerstone had 17 hitting errors and five service errors which led to the 3-set loss.

Match 2 - #RV Cornerstone 3, #RV Saint Thomas 0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14)

The Golden Eagles rebounded from the tough opening loss to post an impressive win against the host Bobcats who came into the match undefeated and were picked as the preseason favorite in the SUN Conference. The first two sets were back and forth with CU pulling away late and the Golden Eagles finished off the home team with an impressive third set.

Megan Newhouse (SR/Grand Haven, Mich.) (11) and Murphy Heyer (SR/Rockford, Mich.) (10) led the attack for Cornerstone while Chelsea Lake (SR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) chipped in with nine terminations. CU hit .326 as a team while Amber Carmean (SR/Fruitport, Mich.) posted a team high 12 digs

Say What?
"We did not play very well in the first match against a tough Missouri Baptist team but we switched some things up and told the players that the Saint Thomas match was now the first of the season. The team showed lots of synergy and unity in the match after starting over mentally and I was very proud of how they rebounded." – Head coach Ryan Campbell

Up Next?
Cornerstone will play two more matches in Miami Gardens on Friday as they will face Olivet Nazarene at 9 a.m. and MidAmerica Nazarene at 4:30
