BOURBANNAIS, Ill. – In what is usually one of the most competitive tournaments that the CU volleyball team enters each season, the Golden Eagles opened the Olivet Nazarene tourney with a pair of sweeps over Campbellsville and Trinity Christian. The two victories lift CU to 9-3 on the year as they will take on #RV Bellevue (Neb.) and No. 12 Columbia on Saturday.

Match 1 - #RV Cornerstone 3, Campbellsville (Ky.) 0 – 26-24, 25-19, 25-23

Cornerstone jumped out to 6-0 leads in each of the first and third sets only to see the Tigers fight back to make them close. With the opening set tied 24-24, Cornerstone got back to back kills from senior Megan Newhouse (SR/Grand Haven, Mich.) to win 26-24.

CU cruised through most of the second set and then again led big early in the third and after a kill from Newhouse to make it 22-17, looked to close out Campbellsvile in a sweep by the Tigers fought back to make 23-22 forcing the Golden Eagles into a timeout. CU then got kills from Murphy Heyer (SR/Rockford, Mich.) and Chelsea Lake (SR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) to finish off the win.

Match 2 – RV Cornerstone 3, Trinity Christian (Ill.) 0 – 25-12, 25-14, 25-19

Trinity Christian kept the Golden Eagles from a perfect run last year at this same tournament and CU got a little revenge as they walked away with a convincing sweep over the CCAC foe. CU raced out to an 11-1 lead in the opening set with five kills from Chelsea Lake and one each from Johanna Egerer (SR/Plymouth, Wisc.) and Hope Leppink (SO/Holland, Mich.).

That start propelled CU to a 25-12 win in which they followed with 25-14 and 25-19 victories to sweep the Trolls. The three middle combo of Johanna Egerer (8 kills), Ellie Van Laar (SO/Hudsonville, Mich.) (6 kills) and freshman Kendra Zwart (FR/Jenison, Mich.) (6 kills) combined for 20 kills.
